Eric Wiens Construction Ltd. Builds Up the It’s Our Time Campaign Tally with a $100,000 Donation

Niagara, ON (September 3, 2010) - With Niagara healthcare top-of-mind, Eric Wiens Construction Ltd. has generously pledged $100,000 to the It’s Our Time Campaign in support of regional cardiac care.

“With heart disease being one of the leading causes of death in Niagara, we wanted to do our part in bringing more specialized cardiac services to the region, says Eric Wiens, of Eric Wiens Construction Ltd.  “It will be comforting to know that our region is equipped to provide the high-quality care that cardiac patients in our communities need and deserve.”

Each year, over 2000 Niagara residents travel outside the region for specialized cardiac care because we currently do not have access to these services in Niagara.  Currently, over 1800 cardiac catheterization procedures are performed on Niagara residents – all of which must be done in Hamilton.

When the new Healthcare Complex opens in 2013, the Niagara Region will have a dedicated 7,000 square-foot Heart Investigation Unit (HIU) to provide timely access to specialized cardiac services, such as cardiac catheterization, closer to home. Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure whereby healthcare practitioners can view how the heart and blood vessels are working so that they can evaluate individual patient needs for other procedures.  Once this diagnostic investigation service is available in Niagara, cardiac patients will receive more timely diagnoses at home, resulting in reduced hospitalizations for heart disease, lower wait times and improved access to treatment in the region.
